Committed to Broward County for 15 years and serving as the Bay’s athletic director for the past three, Adrian Sosa has become a central figure and cornerstone of the school’s athletic program. His life has been shaped by sports. During his senior year of college at Emory University Sosa was a starter and key player on his Basketball team, averaging 15.6 points per game and even scoring seven 3-pointers in one game against Maryville College. The competitive fire Sosa ignited for his own career never faded, it evolved. For Sosa, it is his lifelong appreciation of basketball that has led him to cultivating some of the most successful teams in the state.
“I grew up playing basketball and quickly developed a deep love for the game. It was something I could enjoy independently, even when friends were not around,” Sosa said. “Over time, my appreciation for sports has grown beyond just playing-it has become a way to connect, lead and inspire.”
Under his leadership, the Bay has seen many accomplishments; in recent years, numerous teams have defended their County, District and Regional titles on the path to states. Several football players, volleyball stars and swimmers have been recognized and recruited by Division 1 (D1) schools for their academic and athletic talent. Sosa said that the commitment athletes display at the Bay is why highlighting their success is so important to him.
“Recognizing our athletes is essential because they truly embody the term ‘student-athlete.’ They excel not only in their respective sports- whether on the court, in the pool, or on the field—but also academically,” Sosa said. “Their dedication to excellence deserves to be celebrated.”
The Bay is home to 18 unique sports and while they do not all practice and compete on campus, Sosa makes it a priority to attend games, matches and meets whenever he can to cheer on our teams; his presence is not contained to an office, it is personal. Sosa values the camaraderie that blossoms between everyone involved in athletics and supports whenever possible. From the coaches to the crowds, Sosa said athletics has a role in uniting everybody.
“Sports play a vital role in shaping our school’s culture by fostering school spirit, unity and pride. They provide a shared identity for students, staff and the community,” Sosa said. “Beyond the excitement of competition, athletics instill values like teamwork, discipline, resilience and leadership. Our student athletes often serve as role models, demonstrating how to balance academic and athletic commitments.”
Looking ahead, Sosa has ambitious goals for the Bay. Whether he implements new training resources or embraces new sports, his vision is of a school where student-athletes can thrive. Sosa wants to broaden the spotlight beyond the most visible programs and show the hard work of anyone competing for the school.
“The most important aspect of my role is creating an environment where student-athletes can thrive both on and off the field. My favorite part is witnessing the joy and pride on their faces when their hard work and sacrifices lead to success,” Sosa said. “My goals include enhancing the overall student-athlete experience, increasing participation, introducing new athletic opportunities and improving recognition for our athletes’ achievements.”
