“In school, I have more time on the ball and I am more confident.”
With over a decade of experience on the soccer field, sophomore Olivia Huey leads the Girls’ Junior Varsity Soccer team as captain and already has her sights set on playing at the collegiate level at schools like the University of Central Florida, University of Miami or Florida International University. So far, for the 2025-2026 season, Huey has scored nine goals and has given ten assists in ten games. Huey said she immediately fell in love with soccer when she first started playing and has since played for many teams, including Florida West Elite Clubs National League (ENCL), her current club team.
“I play for Cypress Bay and Florida West ECNL, and some key differences are the speed of play,” Huey said. “In school, I have more time on the ball and I am more confident. In club, it is more challenging because everyone is fast and strong.”
The life of a student-athlete may be demanding, as one must balance both their studies and frequent games with typically daily practices. Huey said she works diligently to manage her time, utilizing any free space she has to complete her work and plan ahead.
“I use my study hall to my advantage and try to get all my homework done there. I also do homework in the car on my way to practice,” Huey said. “I plan ahead and use my agenda or calendar for everything.”
