WATER POLO
DRIVER
#11 JUNIOR 5’4

Senior Joanna Behling has worked her way up on the Bay’s water polo team since her freshman year, becoming more than an everyday player and teammate and instead the 23rd-ranked in the state and team captain. What gave her the initial motivation to start playing was her brothers, who also played for the Bay while they attended. Behling said that watching them helped her to develop a passion and excitement for the game that continues to motivate her playing, even as her college career begins.

“I have learned about playing well under pressure and setting an inspiring example for my teammates,” Behling said. “I would love to continue playing in college, mostly because of the connections I get to make between myself and other players. Water polo has allowed me to meet so many amazing individuals I otherwise never would have known.”

Being a leader means setting an example for your team, whether that is by staying calm under pressure or providing guidance. Behling said that she has created her own way to stay on top of her game before a match. Her leadership has allowed for the team to grow stronger together, leading to achievements such as beating Cooper City for the first time in five years.

“Before competitions, I always prepare by warming up and getting myself into a calm headspace. Usually I love listening to a song before games to relieve some stress,” Behling said. “Our team dynamic is awesome; I have been able to form such a strong bond with the girls on our team, especially the other seniors. Overall, we all work together to make sure every game we play is better than the last.”
