Senior Ansh Shalia was recently named captain of the Bay’s varsity boys golf team, after a successful season last year as bronze medalists in the Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA) championship and District champions. Shalia said that he originally joined the team his freshman year because he enjoyed the challenge of the sport. He said that he has worked hard on improving his skills and has accomplished many of the goals he set for himself.
“[I am most proud of] becoming team captain. It was a goal I had had since I joined the team during my freshman year,” Shalia said. “I have improved my consistency, confidence and ability to perform under pressure. I have also become a better leader and teammate.”
Playing a sport can have various effects on an athlete’s life. The time, dedication and mental stamina needed to play a sport can alter an athlete’s life in both positive and negative ways. After playing golf for six years, Ansh Shalia said that golfing definitely has its pros and cons.
“I like how golf is always challenging and gives me something to improve on,” Shalia said. “I dislike how frustrating it can be when I am not playing my best, but it has taught me to stay focused and move on from mistakes.”
