The Surge

Four years ago, Brielle Davidson started out as a backspot on the Bay’s Junior Varsity (JV) cheerleading team. Now a senior, she took the field last week in the first football game of her final season on the varsity team. Davidson said that being a part of this team has been an amazing experience and she hopes others realize the commitment and physicality that is required from all of them.

”Cheer is not just waving your pompoms. We put in the most amount of time and effort for game days. On Fridays, we get to school at 6:40 a.m. for a morning pep rally, and usually do not end the day until 10 p.m. when the football game ends,” Davidson said. “We are also cheering in the heat for the same amount of time that the players are playing.” 

Davidson said that while she will not continue cheer in college, she is grateful for the opportunities it gave her to try new things. In her sophomore year, she was selected as JV cheer captain and last year, she was a side base rather than her usual backspot. Davidson said she will miss the excitement before taking center stage and showing her school spirit.

“I love cheering for the sidelines, dancing at halftime and being there for both football and basketball season. I especially love football season, and Friday night lights are so special,” Davidson said. “I do not plan on cheering in college professionally. I have loved my time as a cheerleader over these past four years, but I know eventually all good things have to come to an end.”
